Eco-Friendly Golf
Newly elected United States Golf Association president Jim Hyler is leading the charge for environmentally friendly golf course maintenance practices, emphasizing water management. "A more natural game that is sustainable can be promoted as a more responsible philosophy for maintaining golf courses anywhere," Hyler said at the USGA's annual meeting in February 2010. Bluff Creek is ahead of the USGA and is doing its part to protect and preserve the environment. In keeping with the beautiful natural surroundings of this stand-alone golf course, Bluff Creek follows several eco-friendly practices, including:
- Water Management—Bluff Creek uses no county water except in the clubhouse. Bluff Creek sits on a large aquifer of water and uses that source for golf course watering, still primarily limited to use on the greens and tees.
- Chemical applications—We use fewer and less chemicals than other golf courses. Bluff Creek also has dozens of acres of natural heather grasses and ponds that are untreated with chemicals and thereby allows and encourages wildlife such as eagles, hawks, hummingbirds, foxes, blue herons, and bats to exist in harmony with the golf course. In the summer the course has the look and feel of a Scottish links course, exactly what USGA president Hyler is emphasizing.
- Golf Course Shaping—When built, relatively little dirt was moved and the course was designed around the natural lay of the land.
- Recycling—Bluff Creek has for many years recycled aluminum cans and continues to do so.
The Bluff Creek Myth
Contrary to a common misunderstanding, Bluff Creek Golf Course does not flood when it rains. Bluff Creek has nine (9) retention ponds and holds rain water well, better than most golf courses. When it rains you will find that Bluff Creek allows golf carts on more of the course than other golf courses. Bluff Creek is often open after heavy rains when other area golf courses are closed.
However, Bluff Creek is in the White River flood plain making it susceptible to rare flooding when the river rises in golf season (twice in 9 years). 2008's disastrous Johnson County flood only affected the back nine (for 10 days) and did not touch the greens.
